General science teaching in Illinois high schools

This study was conducted to determine the situation in general science teaching in the state of Illinois, with emphasis on the teacher. The need for such a study has occurred to the writer almost from the beginning of his employment as a high school general science teacher. Extremely wide variations wars noticed in the backgrounds of high school general science teachers. In his circle of acquaintances, it seemed to the author that few general science teachers had what could he considered a truly general, comprehensive background in the basis sciences. This conclusion has been noted in a study made by Nelson in 1953. It was also observed that many general science teachers apparently disliked the teaching of general science, and that some even advocated the abolishment of the course as such. Mallinson reports that the Midwest Regional State College Conference on Science and Mathematics Teacher Education has actually made this recommendation. It is fairly evident that many beginning science teachers are forced into this field merely because they are inexperienced, later to be "promoted" to a more specialized field such as biology, chemistry or physics, after basing been in that particular system for some time. In addition, it appeared that general science often was not given the same status as other science courses in the high school curriculum.
