Identification and education of gifted children

The concern voiced by the all too numerous critics of our educational system, that our schools do not fully educate our academically talented or gifted pupils, is not of recent vintage. It has merely been heightened as a result of the recent scientific advances madÂ© by our cold war rivals. In reading the literature it is all too apparent that educators have long been aware of the widely varied needs, interests, and abilities i of our school children. This phase of education, that of providing the gifted child with the opportunity to develop his ability to the fullest extent, is one of the greatest challenges of the teaching profession. It is hoped that the results of this study will give teachers a deeper insight into the identification of the academically talented, their needs, and some proposals for the education of this group. The properly trained gifted children of today will, upon attaining adulthood, have the potentiality of making outstanding contributions to the welfare and progress of our country.
