Paleoecological significance of dominance relationships in silicoflagellates occurring in sub-Atlantic/Antarctic sediment cores

The silicoflagellate genera Dictyocha and Distephanus are often used to determine paleotemperatures because the ratio of warm water organisms to cold water organisms is an indicator of paleo-oceanographic temperatures. In addition to temperature, other factors, including competitive exclusion, succession, mutagenesis, genetic drift, and natural selection affect dominance relationships in natural ecosystems. Many of these factors may have been working on these silicoflagellate genera, which were obtained from sediment cores in the Antarctic.
