College students' perceptions of job competence based upon communication abilities

The purpose of this study was to investigate listeners' perceptions of two speakers during a job interview. College students were asked to rate two speakers; aperson who stuttered and a person who was fluent during a videotaped job interview.The results of this study suggested that although the subjects noticed the speech difficulties of the candidate who stuttered and thought her to be nervous, they did not perceive the speaker who stuttered to be less competent for the job. The candidate who stuttered was rated in a comparable range to the fluent candidate on questions of competency and employment.
