Infrared spectra of iron-rich chamosite and chrysotile

Iron-rich chrysotile and chamosite samples occur In a lamprophyre dike near Ely, Minnesota. These minerals were investigated with the use of an infrared spectrometer. The spectra of these samples were compared to previously published spectra. The substitution of iron for magnesium in octahedral positions in these minerals cause a decrease or increase in the vibrational frequency of the 81-0 structure. Tt might be possible to use the shift to make rough determinations of the iron content in serpentines. Lamprophyre is considered to consist almost totally of alteration minerals based on the similarities of spectra.
