The rarity of appearance of pigmented buphthalmic rabbits from albino and pigmented buphthalmic carrier parents had been previously attributed to the close linkage between the bu (buphthalmos) and c (pigmentation) loci. Homozygous albino, buphthalmic males were mated to homozygous pigmented, normal eyed females and the doubly heterozygous offspring were backcrossed to albino, buphthalmic homozygotes to test for crossing over. Results indicate that the two loci are not closely linked but better approximate independent assortment. The rarity of appearance of pigmented buphthalmic animals from carrier ratings may be better explained by selection against this genotype.
