The question of "Church and State," more precisely, religion and our public schools or religion in our public schools has been one that has long confronted our American judiciary system. The discovery of America was indeed the "dawn of a new world." Its discoverer and his crew were Christians. They were sent on behalf of a Christian country, Spain. The later pilgrims to America were also religious, and for them America was a haven for refugees from religious persecution in Europe. These first settlers were strongly Christian in flavor.
