Resource partitioning of two Caribbean basslets of the genus Gramma was examined at Glovers Reef off the coast of Belize, Central America. Substrate and depth partitioning was demonstrated. Vertical zonation of the two species was related to the complexity of the substrate rather than to the avilability of food resources at various depths. Peak spawning of both species occurred over an extended period in June and July. Peak spawning of Gramma loreto remained at a high level until the end of July and was completed by mid-August. Peak spawning of Gramma melacara gradually increased until early July and was completed by early August. Microhabitat utilization was demonstrated in the area of co-occurrence. Possible factors accounting for the lack of G. melacara in shallower areas are included.
