Structural differences are quantified among nonmetropolitan communities in Illinois. These quantitative differences are found to be generally consistent with locational criteria identified by previous questionnaire studies of manufacturing firm location. A number of these quantitative differences are found to be significantly associated with net changes in the number of manufacturing establishments over time. Statistical analysis indicates that these criteria change in importance as the scale of production, as measured by number of employees, varies.
