Wheel and rail contact point analysis is a fundamental and critical problem in dynamic simulation of railroad vehicle. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient method to compute the contact points between rails and a wheelset. This is achieved by locating the common normal and then reducing the chord distance along it to zero. In this process, the structure of the governing equations is exploited to achieve higher computational efficiency. The method is adapted to two, three, and four simultaneous contact points.
