A procedure for categorizing communicative intentions in low-and mid-autistic children

This study explored the development of an assessment tool of communicative abilities based on communicative intents for use by the Communicative Disorders Specialist in evaluating seven children with autism. Each child was assessed by interviews with the teacher and a parent, observations recorded by the interviewees, observations of the child in the classroom by the experimenter, and administration of a series of elicitation tasks. The results indicated that accurate descriptions of the autistic child's communicative intents could be written by compiling information obtained in the proposed procedure.
