This thesis, "A Historical Study of the Theatre Activities at Northern Illinois University between 1899 and 1972," traces the development of both the curricular and co-curricular programs in theatre arts at the University from its beginning in 1899 until the establishment of the Theatre Arts Department in 1972. The focus of the study centers on productions presented by Northern Illinois University under the direction of staff members. Also included is the addition of personnel and facilities, curriculum development, dramatic organizations, and the development of the Theatre Arts Department. This study draws on University publications including course catalogs, newspapers, magazines and yearbooks, as well as the DeKalb Chronicle and personal interviews. It provides a record of the production activities during the years leading up to the establishment of the Theatre Arts Department at NIU in 1972, and presents a history of the evolution of the goals and objectives of both the curricular and co-curricular programs in theatre, the theatre organizations, faculty and facilities. The study examines the growth of the theatre at Northern from its early years when it was an extra-curricular, social organization through 1972 when it became a highly specialized and complex area of academic study.
