Production of the /s/ phoneme in a variety of phonetic contexts by forty preschool children

The purpose of this study was to investigate the production of the /s/ phoneme in a variety of phonetic contexts by forty preschool children. The percentages of correct production of the /s/ phoneme were compared for males and females. It was determined that no significant difference in percentages of correct /s/ production existed as a function of speaker sex. The results of data analysis indicated that the children responded to the stimuli with approximately the same percentage of correct /s/ production for all phonetic contexts. However, it was determined that the children were more consistent in their articulation of /s/ in similar phonetic contexts than they were in different contexts. Individualized patterns of /s/ articulation were noted for the forty subjects.
