Bi-directional universal power converter

The objective of this project is to design and build a prototype of a universal power converter. This power converter should convert 110 volts (60 Hz) to 220 Volts (50Hz) and vice versa. There are two major different power conversion techniques currently in practice. They are DC link conversion and Matrix conversion technique. In this project the DC link conversion technique was implemented. The converter circuit which includes transformation, rectification, conversion and inversion of input voltage to get the desired output voltage was implemented. Values for various circuit components were calculated using engineering theories learned from various classes. Using the calculated value the circuit was constructed on PSPICE. In PSPICE, the desired input and output of the converter was verified. The following parameters were also considered: cost, weight and size, the efficiency of the circuit, total harmonic distortion, over current and voltage protection and the safety ofthe converter. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Recommended Practices and Requirements for Harmonics Control in Electric Power Systems were implemented throughout the process . Once these conditions were met, the converter was built and tested to meet the requirements.
