Today's media & societal opinions transform the way a 2009 preteen, 7-16 years of age, views his or her own body image. My goal was to find out precisely how drastically effected are the students at Huntley Middle School in DeKalb, Illinois. I conducted a self-administered questionnaire to two life skills classes of 18-22 students total. I questioned the students about their personal selections on magazines, television shows, celebrity idols, and their opinions on eating habits, physical activity, and body image. I found that these students at middle school are beginning to be affected by the subliminal messages. They are at risk later on in life for many negative effects physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. There needs to be a focus on promoting a healthier and realistic body image, or today's society could have an epidemic of problems later on.
