The purpose of this research was to examine the extent and nature of rainforest alteration near the city of Manaus, Brazil. This was accomplished through the digital analysis of Landsat imagery dated 1973 to 1982. Two digital image processing techniques, spatial filtering and logical smoothing, were applied to the image data. During image classification, the inclusion of a Landsat MSS band 5 image that had been spatially filtered using a 3x3 median low-pass filter significantly increased classification accuracy. Logical smoothing was found to be useful for cosmetically enhancing a classified image. Digital change and transition maps were produced to study the extent of forest to non-forest change that had occurred within the study area during the time period between 1973 and 1982. The results indicated a considerable amount of deforestation, and revealed the dynamic nature of rainforest conversion.
