Magnetic properties of rare-earth-silver-gallium compounds
The magnetic properties of compounds in the series RAgGa (where R is a lanthanide rare earth) have heen measured at temperatures from 3 to 300 K at fields up to 26 kilogauss. The members of the series measured were PrAgGa, NdAgGa, SmAgGa, GdAgGa, TbAgGa, DyAgGa, HoAgGa, ErAgGa, and TmAgGa. The crystal structure of these compounds is body-centered orthorhombic of CeCu2 type with space group Imma. Above 60 K, all compounds are paramagnetic with all compounds except SmAgGa clearly exhibiting Curie- Weiss type behavior. At lower temperatures, GdAgGa, HoAgGa, ErAgGa, and SmAgGa order ferromagnetically, DyAgGa orders metamagnetically, and TbAgGa orders antiferromagnetically. PrAgGa and TmAgGa almost order ferromagnetically at the lowest observed temperatures. Paramagnetic Curie temperatures do not follow the DeGennes law for this series, but effective moments show good agreement with the ground state values of L, S, and J predicted by the Hund rules.
