Morphological data are presented which show three phenotypically distinct gall morphs produced by what was previously thought to be a single gallmaker, Asteroymia carbonifera. Gel electrophoresis was utilized to determine if each of the variants were produced by a single polymorphic species or whether they were produced by distinct races or species of gallmakers. Electrophoretic data support the hypothesis that the three gall morphs are produced by three different species of gallmakers. Gene frequency data suggest very limited gene flow among the adults of the three morphs. Allochronic isolation as a mechanism of reproductive isolation is not supported by population data. Models of sympatric and allopatric speciation are considered.
