Students' Career Based on Their Perceptions of Accounting

This study investigated three focused areas of accountancy smdents' perceptions. The three areas were the sources of accounting career information, the characteristics and qualities necessary to succeed in the profession, and the factors influencing acceptance of a job offer. The characteristics within the profession were grouped into three categories~ these being public accounting, private industry, and governrnentJnot-for-profit. Moreover, all three categories were teSted for gender differences. The results reveal that Northern Illinois University accountancy students have a strong understanding ofwhat is available in the job market. However, the study also reveals that professors, recruiters, advisors, and the Department of Accountancy itself could be more effective resources for NIU accountancy students.
