Oligomeric modeling of 2,5-dibutoxy PPV : charge state generation by protonic doping

The synthesis of polyacetylene, poly(para-phenylene vinylene), poly(2,5- dibutoxyphenylene vinylene), poly(para-phenylene vinylene) oligomers, the charge states formed therein by protonic doping, and the possible use of oligomeric segments in copolymer design are reviewed. A number of 2,5-dibutoxy-substituted poly(para-phenylene vinylene) oligomers have been synthesized via Wittig type condensations and studied as model compounds of the electroactive polymer poly(2,5-dibutoxyphenylene vinylene). These compounds were protonically doped in CF₃COOH, and successive polaron and bipolaron formation followed by absorption spectroscopy. These oligomers are highly soluble in common organic solvents and composite films incorporating these oligomers as the electroactive moiety have been prepared. Several oligomers with -COOH end groups have been synthesized to be used as monomers in copolymers designed to have alternating electroactive segments and flexible spacer groups.
