In this thesis a classification and coding system is developed for the injection molding industry. In developing this system for injection molding a new view of group technology has emerged. The old view of group technology saw the process as being derived from the product. In the new era of group technology, the product derives the tooling. Injection molding benefits from this new direction because injection molded products are formed in one process. Utilizing this new outlook, an eight step procedure for classification and coding is created. These steps lead the user to develop a code for new product groups that are being formed. To validate this procedure, real life data from industry is used to test the coding system. In doing so, it is shown that this new system impacts not just the engineering departments, but the company as a whole.
